PCI DSS compliance for fintech and payments teams
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard applies to any organization that stores, processes or transmits cardholder data, or that can affect the security of the environment that does. It is set by the PCI Security Standards Council and enforced through card brands and acquirers.
The twelve requirements
PCI DSS groups its requirements under six goals, covering network security, protecting account data, vulnerability management, access control, monitoring and testing, and security policy.
- Install and maintain network security controls
- Apply secure configurations
- Protect stored account data
- Protect cardholder data in transit
- Protect against malicious software
- Develop and maintain secure systems
- Restrict access by business need to know
- Identify users and authenticate access
- Restrict physical access
- Log and monitor access
- Test security regularly
- Support security with policies and programs
Reducing your scope
The most effective way to simplify PCI DSS is to keep card data out of your systems, for example by using a payment provider's hosted fields so card numbers never touch your servers. A smaller scope means fewer controls to evidence.
How validation works
Smaller merchants and service providers usually validate with a Self-Assessment Questionnaire, while larger ones undergo an assessment by a Qualified Security Assessor and file a Report on Compliance. Requirements introduced as future-dated in version 4.0 became mandatory on 31 March 2025.
How Cevro helps
- Cevro runs automated checks against 11 connected systems (cloud, source code, identity, people and payments) and maps each result to PCI DSS and the other frameworks you track.
- Every failing control comes with a specific fix and a way to re-check it, so the gap list turns into a task list.
- Evidence collected for one framework is reused for the others, and anything a scan can't produce goes into the evidence vault.
- A live trust page and exportable evidence let you answer buyers and auditors without starting from a blank spreadsheet.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need PCI DSS if I use Stripe or another provider?
Usually you still have obligations, but they are much lighter when the provider handles card data and you never store or process it yourself. Confirm which questionnaire applies to your integration.
Is PCI DSS the same as a banking cybersecurity framework?
No. PCI DSS protects cardholder data. National banking regulators publish their own cybersecurity expectations for licensed institutions, which apply in addition.
